Professor of Agrometeorology


Gerrit Hoogenboom is a Professor of Agrometeorology at Washington State University. Dr. Hoogenboom was born in the Netherlands, where his family owned 1 ha of greenhouses for vegetable production. After completing his M.Sc. at Wageningen University with a dual major in Horticulture and Theoretical Production Ecology, he moved to the USA, where he received his Ph.D. in Agronomy and Soils from Auburn University, Alabama. He spent four years at the University of Florida as a Postdoctoral Research Associate and joined the University of Georgia in 1989 as an Assistant Professor.

Since the start of his career, Dr. Hoogenboom has been interested in combining crop physiology and mathematics. His current research emphasis is on the development and application of crop simulation models and decision support systems for yield prediction and resource management. This ranges from gene-based models to the application of crop models for climate variability and climate change, biofuels, resource and sustainability and food security. He coordinates the development of the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT), a software program that includes computer simulation models for over 25 different crops, data utilities, and application programs. He has conducted training workshops on crop modeling in many countries.

Dr. Hoogenboom is a co-Principal Investigator of the Southeast Climate Consortium (SECC;, a partnership of universities in the southeastern USA that are developing solutions for managing climate risks to people and natural resources in agriculture and other ecosystems. Dr. Hoogenboom also developed and currently manages the Georgia Automated Environmental Monitoring Network (AEMN;, a network of over 75 automated weather stations that provide weather data and associated data products in near real-time. He has published more than 180 scientific papers in refereed journals as well as numerous book chapters and proceedings. He is an Editor for Agricultural Systems, Journal of Agricultural Science, Climate Research, and the Brazilian Journal of Agrometerology.
