Malnutrition in children and adults results from a number of factors related to the availability and accessibility of quality food as well as the presence of infectious diseases. As such, the spatial relationship between agricultural systems (farming and livestock) and nutritional and dietary outcomes in human population can provide valuable information to aid in the design of appropriate policy interventions.

In the 21st century, many people have cell phones. This is true even in Tanzania, the focus of a recent IFPRI survey, where 35% of farm households report having mobile phones in 2007. Using technology, we can reach these farmers in a faster and less expensive way by sending surveys directly to their mobile phones.

What is the spatial relationship between biophysical characteristics and net exports in a particular country or region? What do historical patterns and spatial variability in the environment, agricultural production, and natural shocks tell us about food distribution and possible mitigation through responsive trade flows? HarvestChoice explores these questions in a recently published chapter included in the flagship publication, ReSAKSS Annual Trends and Outlook Report (ATOR) 2013.

HarvestChoice recently launched a series of Country Agricultural Snapshots to illustrate the basic characteristics of farming households across a panel of five sub-Saharan African countries (Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda). These non-technical reports include country-level information that allow for cross-country comparisons on a range of important dimensions related to farming and livestock.

One of the things we are working on at HarvestChoice is the diffusion of agricultural technologies. A number of papers include maps that show how a technology moves across areas and we have also begun to construct similar maps for Tanzania using agricultural census data. By better visualizing the diffusion of technology throughout Tanzania, we hope that this will spark more conversation about what might be influencing farmer decisions in sub-Saharan Africa.

That’s right; SPAM 2005 is out for release and freely available to the public. That means more accurate and up-to-date spatially disaggregated crop production statistics and more of it.
