The region of Southern African borders the Indian and Southern Atlantic Oceans and extends northward to the southern borders of the DRC and Tanzania. It includes 11 African countries. Maize is the number one crop and far exceeds any other cropping system in the region in terms of area and production. It is most often cultivated in a mixed farming system.
