The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) supports a multitude of humanitarian programs in the United States and developing countries around the world. Inspired by the Green Revolution while mindful of some of its downfalls (e.g., environmental degradation), BMGF has made agricultural development a top priority as part of their Global Development Program.

The Foundation has dedicated almost $2 billion in support of agricultural development, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Their mission is to break the cycle of hunger and poverty for hundreds of millions of people through innovations in small shareholder farming—“to sell what [farmers] grow or raise, increase their incomes, and make their farms more productive and sustainable.”
