Abstract

Although the different roles of men and women in agriculture in different parts of Sub-Saharan Africa have been widely acknowledged, there have not been consistent efforts to collect data on these patterns. This paper presents a way of classifying gendered farm management systems and then describes pilots of four different approaches to collecting and georeferencing information on the dominant pattern in each area.

Deriving Sub-National Population Estimates for Sub-Saharan Africa

In previous releases of HarvestChoice 5-arc minute population (up to SChEF r12.03) we relied exclusively on population maps from CIESIN Global Rural-Urban Mapping Project, version 1 (GRUMPv1 at 30-arc second) combined to more recent national estimates from WDI.

HarvestChoice relies heavily on large sets of household survey data to evaluate the economic impact of biophysical productivity responses at the farm level and on target populations.

Households

Households

One of the hallmarks of HarvestChoice’s strategic evaluation approach is its heavy reliance on large sets of household survey (micro) data. We are progressively assembling a collection of farm household attributes and using these to capture important characteristics of households, both urban and rural. Of particular importance are household measures of participation in the production and consumption of agricultural products. The potential direct benefits to farm households of improved production systems will be in part shaped by the amount and quality of their land and labor assets, their attitudes towards innovation and risk, and their access to new knowledge and services.
